Archives
  • 01) How do I get to the Centro Archives?
  • The Centro Archives is housed on the third floor of the East Building of Hunter College, inside the Jacqueline Grennan Wexler Library located on the southeast corner of 68 Street and Lexington Avenue. If you are traveling by subway, take the 6 train to 68th Street or the F train to 63rd Street. If you are traveling by bus, take the M66, M98, M101, M102, or M103.
  • 02) Who can do research at the Centro Archives?
  • The Centro Archives is open to all researchers. We encourage the use of our holdings by any individual interested in the history and culture of Puerto Rico and welcome students, faculty and the general public alike.
  • 03) How do I do research at the Centro Archives?
  • Research at the Centro Archives is by appointment only. To make an appointment, contact Pedro Juan Hernández, Senior Archivist, at (212) 772-5151 or by e-mail at dhernand@hunter.cuny.edu.

Please be prepared to discuss your research interests and needs so that the archivist may better assist you. Specifically, you should provide the archivist with the collection title and box number(s) of the materials that you are interested in looking at during your visit.
  • 04) Should I conduct research in the Centro Archives or Centro Library?
  • While the collections of the Centro Archives and the Centro Library are complementary, their focus and function are different. The Archives collect primary source materials (original documents, creative works or artifacts) while the Library concentrates on secondary sources (books, periodicals, encyclopedias and other reference sources). With this distinction in mind, you should contact the Archives with reference questions pertaining to the individual papers or organizational records that are listed in our holdings.

Upon reaching the third floor of the East Building, researchers must inform security personnel at the entrance of the Wexler Library that they are visiting the Centro Archives. CUNY staff and students should use their CUNY identification when visiting our collection. All other visitors must present picture ID.

Once inside the Centro Archives, you will be greeted by an archivist and given a brief orientation on the policies and procedures of the Centro Archives. Please note that researchers will only be allowed to keep a laptop computer while accessing the collection. All other personal belongings will be held in a locker until the end of the visit. Paper and pencils will be provided by the archivist. Photographic equipment is not allowed.
  • 05) What information can I access online?
  • Many Centro Archives collections have finding aids – guides that offer historical/biographical information and a detailed listing and description of the contents of a collection – that are available online in English and in Spanish. The Centro Archives recommends that researchers read these guides, particularly the Scope and Content Note and Series Description, before planning a visit. For collections that have not been fully processed, we offer an inventory or container list so that researchers can gain a general sense of its contents.

In addition, the Archives holdings can be accessed through the CUNY+, OCLC and RLIN online catalogs.
  • 06) Do the Centro Archives have digital collections?
  • The majority of the Centro Archives holdings have not been digitized at this time. However, we have been involved in two digital projects that can be accessed through our website, The FBI Files on Puerto Ricans and Ventana al pasado: Building a Latino/Hispanic Virtual Research Collection (launching Spring 2008).
  • 07) Are there restrictions on any of the Centro Archives collections?
  • Individual collections may contain restricted materials due to privacy and/or legal issues. The container list in the finding aid for each collection specifies which documents or folders are not accessible to researchers.
  • 08) Can I schedule a class visit to the Centro Archives?
  • The Centro Archives would be happy to make arrangements for a class visit. Please contact Pedro Juan Hernández, Senior Archivist, at (212) 772-5151 or e-mail at dhernand@hunter.cuny.edu for more information.
  • 09) I cannot visit the Centro Archives. What type of research assistance can you provide by phone or email?
  • The Centro Archives can address general reference questions by phone or email. In-depth reference questions will be handled on a case-by-case basis. The Centro Archives does offer photoduplication of select images and documents for a fee. See the fee schedule below for more details.
  • 10) What fees are charged by the Centro Archives?
  • Please contact Pedro Juan Hernández, Senior Archivist, at (212) 772-5151 or e-mail at dhernand@hunter.cuny.edu.
  • 11) How do I obtain copyright permission to publish Centro Archives material?
  • Before publishing any material held by the Centro Archives, written permission must be granted by the Senior Archivist. If the Centro Archives is not the copyright holder of those materials, researchers and publishers will be directed to the appropriate contact. We emphasize that it is the responsibility of the researcher or publisher to obtain copyright permission.
  • 12) What is the preferred citation of the Centro Archives?
  • Collection Title, Archives of the Puerto Rican Diaspora, Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños, Hunter College, CUNY.
  • 13) Can I donate materials to the Centro Archives?
  • The mission of the Centro Archives is to collect, preserve and provide access to resources documenting the history, culture and experience of Puerto Ricans. To this end, we accept personal papers, organizational records, non-print materials and other types of relevant documents that chronicle the rich history of our community. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact Pedro Juan Hernández, Senior Archivist, at (212) 772-5151 or e-mail at dhernand@hunter.cuny.edu.
  • 14) Do I need to organize my papers or records before donating them?
  • There is no need to arrange or rearrange materials prior to making a donation. In fact, the original order of the documents often has a historical significance that we try to preserve. However, the identification of unmarked materials (lightly and in pencil) or any written historical or biographical information relevant to the collection that you can provide can be helpful to our processing work.
  • 15) Will the Centro Archives appraise individual items or collections?
  • No, the Centro Archives does not provide financial appraisals.
  • 16) Do the Centro Archives accept volunteers?
  • Yes, we accept and appreciate the assistance of volunteers.
