The program will also support grants specifically addressing the Puerto Rican Diaspora to the United States and other Caribbean nations. While projects can focus on the Diaspora in any of these areas, we are especially interested in topics related to the Puerto Rican Diaspora to other parts of the Caribbean.
In the late 19th century and early 20th century there began a working class/agricultural labor exodus from Puerto Rico to nearby Caribbean locations due to deteriorating living conditions on the island and acute labor demand abroad. This was a precursor to the massive migration of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s to the U.S. These later migrations to most notably, New York, then Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and other cities of the mainland are well known and to some extent variously documented. What are not well known and hardly documented are the Puerto Rican migrations to other Caribbean Islands, in particular, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and St. Croix. El Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños is now embarking on small projects to fill this historical gap. Its Caribbean Exchange Program is supporting research in this area by building our historical archives and a social history of these migrations through documentation efforts and via oral history. Through the work of the descendants themselves, graduate students and faculty, from both the Centro and the island countries, we hope to build an archive preserving this experience. The results of this effort to have the potential to make a significant and unique contribution to our knowledge of the international aspects of the Puerto Rican Diaspora.

The CUNY-Caribbean Exchange Program supports the exchange of faculty, researchers, and graduate students between City University of New York and academic, research and cultural institutions in the Caribbean. The program is thus issuing a call for proposals for projects related to Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and other Caribbean nations. These grants are considered on a rolling basis and are considered "General Grants.
Priority will be given to applicants seeking to develop or strengthen institutional links (i.e. working with a university department/school or a research center on a particular project), and to those working collaboratively with researchers and students in the Caribbean. A small amount of funds will be allocated for proposals for individual research.
